ONUKA is electrofolk project that was created by famous Ukrainian electronic musicians Eugene Filatov (aka The Maneken) and Nata, the former vocalist of Tomato Jaws (Ukraine) and KOOQLA (Russia). The band consists of 7 persons that play keyboards, drums, traditional flute, two trombones, French horn, bandura (Ukrainian traditional instrument) and number of other traditional instruments and electronic samplers.
The name ONUKA means “granddaughter” in Ukrainian. It pays tribute to Nata’s famous grandfather that was one of the greatest masters who produced traditional musical instruments. His most known work is the restoration of Taras Shevchenko’s (the most famous Ukrainian poet of all times) kobza (Ukrainian traditional instrument).
ONUKA’s debut EP Look was released on the 15th of May 2014 and debuted at #1 in iTunes Ukraine chart. Debut album ONUKA was released on the 15th of October 2014 and also shot #1 spot in iTunes Ukraine chart and then returned to the top of the chart in December.
ONUKA released 3 official music videos. They had been watched for almost 2 millions times on official youtTube channel only. “Time” has been shown at different international musical sites including popular American blog MTV Iggy.
ONUKA presented their debut album live on the 17th of October 2014 in Kiev. They played next concert on the venue for the 1300 people in half of the year and it was sold out during three weeks.
During 2015 ONUKA received a number of musical awards – Ukrainian National Musical Award YUNA (Discovery of the year), Kiss FM – Discovery of the year (the most popular Ukrainian dance radio), ELLE style award (Musician of the year) etc. ONUKA has made a tour over Ukraine in support of their debut album. They played more than 70 concerts during the last year and performed 10 musical festivals in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Hungary including Sziget in Budapest.
New EP Vidlik will be released on February 8, 2016. It would be dedicated to Chernobyl disaster (also referred to as Chernobyl or the Chernobyl accident), a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the town of Pripyat, in Ukraine.
